“The start of something big”
The launch of Big Picture Education Australia and a celebration of the work of the first three Australian Big Picture and Big Picture Inspired Schools;
- Bridgewater High, Bridgewater, Tasmania,
- Montrose Bay High, Glenorchy, Tasmania,
- Yule Brook College, Maddington, Western Australia (Big Picture Inspired)
Followed by a symposium on Big Picture Education ideas and approaches.
Symposium presenters:
Teachers and students from the schools will present their stories and work with participants during the day.
Elliot Washor, Ed.D. is the co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning. He is also the co-founder of The Met Center in Providence, RI. Elliot’s interests lie in the field of how schools can connect with communities to understand tacit and disciplinary learning both in and outside of school. He has recently been selected as one of the Daring Dozen – the Twelve Most Daring Educators in the World by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. His dissertation on Innovative Pedagogy and New Facilities won the merit award from DesignShare, the international forum for innovative schools. Big Picture education has spread to over 60 schools in the US and is inspiring educators in Canada, The Netherlands, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.
Steve Bingler has undertaken projects focused principally on the planning and design of environments for living and learning. He served as a special consultant to the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education for policy related to the design of schools as centers of the community. Additionally, Steven frequently speaks at national symposia and conferences related to innovations in community-based and small school planning and design.
What is Big Picture?
The Big Picture Learning design is a dynamic approach to learning, doing, and thinking that has been changing the lives of students, educators, and entire communities since 1995. It has now spread to over 60 schools in the USA and other countries are adopting the ideas.
In Australia, in addition to the 3 schools (Bridgewater High, Montrose Bay High, and Yule Brook College) that have become Big Picture schools, there are 17 other schools that are Big Picture Education inspired.
Who would be interested in attending the Conference?
All leaders, teachers, students and parents who are currently implementing Big Picture Learning ideas who would like to share ideas, strategies and issues and learn from other practitioners.
This one day event will be open to anyone from schools or the community more widely, who is interested in finding out more about how these schools came about and what it means to be a Big Picture School.

Lunch and morning tea will be provided
Day one welcome function:
At the end of day one, beverages will be available for purchase from the bar at the venue and complimentary savory platters will be served.
