Big Picture Learning is learning for the real world | Sara Leonard | TEDxSanDiego

Description:

It’s time to rethink the educational platform on a wider scale and invite our communities to be the classroom outside of school. Big Picture model schools make learning more personal, meaningful, and give kids a greater purpose as they prepare for their future. Learning and becoming real-world-ready means kids need to leave the classroom to have a well-rounded educational experience. Exploring their interests and getting coached by professionals is a powerful and critical part of discovering their talents, building skills, and learning deeper within the content around any career. Early in her career, Sara made a personal commitment to be a change agent for students. Her experiences in the private sector, as a parent, and in all of her roles in schools gave her insights and a desire to help shape the future of educational practice. After four years at San Diego Met, which is affiliated with the Big Picture Learning network of schools, Sara recently moved from her native San Diego to the Denver, Colorado area where she is eager to help grow the work of Big Picture to more students and communities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
