Big Picture Education is a highly personalised approach to education that combines academic work with real-world learning. The Big Picture design model aims to educate “one student at a time” which places the student, their passions and their interests at the centre of the learning process.
This half day workshop with, Steve Bingler and Elliot Washor is for school designers/architects, systems leaders and teachers who would like to explore the idea of schools as centres of community. It is aimed at those interested in learning more about Big Picture in general, and the connection between school design and learning.
Steve Bingler - Architect (AIA, REFP, NCARB) has undertaken projects focused principally on the planning and design of environments for living and learning. He served as a special consultant to the Office of the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education for policy related to the design of schools as centers of the community. Additionally, Steven frequently speaks at national symposia and conferences related to innovations in community-based and small school planning and design.
Mr. Bingler is the founder of Concordia LLC, a community planning and architectural firm in New Orleans, LA. Under his leadership, Concordia’s projects span a wide range of building types from the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans to the Henry Ford Academy in Dearborn, Michigan. Concordia also managed the Unified New Orleans Plan, a comprehensive strategy for the redevelopment of the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The work included coordinating 12 urban planning firms through more than 54 community planning district meetings and 3 citywide community congress events that included the participation of more than 9,000 citizens.
Elliot Washor - Educator (Ed.D.) is the co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning. He is also the co-founder of The Met Center in Providence, RI.
Elliot’s interests lie in the field of how schools can connect with communities to understand tacit and disciplinary learning both in and outside of school. He has recently been selected as one of the Daring Dozen – the Twelve Most Daring Educators in the World by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. His dissertation on Innovative Pedagogy and New Facilities won the merit award from DesignShare, the international forum for innovative schools. His work has spanned across school design, pedagogy, learning environments, and education reform and is supporting others doing similar work throughout the world. Big Picture education has spread to over 60 schools in the US and is inspiring educators in Canada, The Netherlands, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.
