This half day workshop will be led by Elliot Washor, Viv White, Angela Bird and teachers experienced in Big Picture. It is aimed at schools who would like to become involved in implementing Big Picture learning.
It will examine Big Picture principles and practices in schools and communities. It is open to anyone from schools or the community more widely, interested in finding out about how to become a Big Picture School.
Big Picture Education is a highly personalized approach to education that combines academic work with real-world learning. Participants will explore the Big Picture design model for educating “one student at a time” which places the student, their passions and their interests at the centre of the learning process.
Elliot Washor, Ed.D. is the co-founder and co-director of Big Picture Learning. He is also the co-founder of The Met Center in Providence, RI. Elliot’s interests lie in the field of how schools can connect with communities to understand tacit and disciplinary learning both in and outside of school. He has recently been selected as one of the Daring Dozen – the Twelve Most Daring Educators in the World by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. His dissertation on Innovative Pedagogy and New Facilities won the merit award from DesignShare, the international forum for innovative schools. Big Picture education has spread to over 60 schools in the US and is inspiring educators in Canada, The Netherlands, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.
Viv White is the Founder and CEO of the Big Picture Education Australia. Viv was CEO of the Victorian Schools Innovation Commission (VSIC) and the Australian National Schools Network (ANSN). The enduring question that has dominated her activism is the fundamental belief that all young Australians should have the chance to succeed in our education systems. Big Picture is her passion. She has worked with Australian schools for thirty years as a policy activist, teacher, university researcher and facilitator of change and improvement.
Angela Bird has been in education in Tasmania for 30 years. Her experience spans all sectors K-12 and she has had positions in curriculum and professional learning. As principal of Claremont High School she became interested in Big Picture Education and over a three period restructured the grade 9-10 program to reflect BP principles. In 2009 she was instrumental in the amalgamation of two neighbouring high schools and in establishing a separate Big Picture school as part of that process.
